Music, as much as story and dialogue, helps to evoke emotion and immerse the player in the setting of a game; Moebius is no exception. Robert Holmes lends his talents as musician and composer to help bring the world to life – and what a diverse world it is. In an email interview conducted with Holmes about the music, he says “[Moebius] is probably the most diverse of the games we have done in terms of musical style. It’s a bit of a mash up really, which hopefully creates an interesting musical alchemy.” We organized his thoughts for this entry, in which he describes the variety of influences that inspire him as a musician, the various themes explored, and how he derives inspiration from his travels for creating new songs.

Who is Gabriel Knight?
Gabriel Knight is a Schattenjäger (shadow hunter) who starred in three paranormal adventure games designed by Jane Jensen and released by Sierra On-Line during the 1990s. Known for their rich, mature storylines, all three Gabriel Knight ® games received a bunch of industry awards including Best of E3, Best Story, Adventure Game of the Year, and Game of the Year from publications such as Computer Gaming World, PC Gamer, Gamespot, and CNET. The rakish rogue became an instant favorite of adventure gamers everywhere.
Since most of you have spent the year being shameless kleptomaniacs, thieving anything that isn’t nailed down and generally causing disruption and mayhem wherever you go, chances are you’ve all ended up on Santa’s naughty list. That’s a lot of coal in a lot of stockings if we leave it up to the big boy in red. But since we know you only misbehaved in the name of solving puzzles, and because we know our very own toymakers, we’ll do what any good adventurer does when things don’t go our way: we’ll improvise!
Robert Holmes is an American composer best known for his work at Sierra Online, where he composed the music for the Gabriel Knight series of adventure games created by Jane Jensen (his wife) throughout the 90’s. Most recently, he contributed to the soundtrack of Jensen’s long-awaited adventure game Gray Matter, both as composer of the general score and as a musician with his band The Scarlet Furies. It therefore goes without saying that AMO is delighted to present an exclusive interview with Robert where we discuss this project, the Gabriel Knight series and more!
For anyone who has ever played Sierra On-Line’s Gabriel Knight, the name Robert Holmes immediately calls to mind the somber sweetness and moody darkness of the games’ music. There are few in the industry who are so instantly recognized by their music as the highly talented Holmes, whose work as a performing musician garners him even more fans. He has been working with a band, involved in several songwriting collaborations, and producing further work for other clients. This busy schedule seems to suit him well, as he is also looking forward to working again with his famous wife, Jane Jensen, on a future project that has recently received much media attention. Despite his demanding commitments, Holmes had found time to be interviewed by me, talking about his experience of music in games, the impact of changes in technology today, the role of music in films, the possibility of another sequel to Gabriel Knight, and other future projects.
